A Special Conversation with Dr. Answorth A. Allen ‘84:

Leading practitioner in the field of Sports Medicine, Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, Team Orthopedist for the NY Knicks, and former Head Team Physician for the New York Mets

A leading practitioner in the field of Sports Medicine,  Dr. Answorth A. Allen, ‘84, is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, specializing in sports-related injuries of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. He is the Medical Director for Hospital for Special Surgery Long Island, and a Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Dr. Allen has served as Team Orthopedist for the NY Knicks since 2005, and is an Orthopedic Consultant for USA Basketball, the West Indies Cricket Board of Control and St. John’s University. He is the former Head Team Physician for the New York Mets.

Dr. Allen has served as Medical Director to the NBA Players Association and is the former Team Physician for the Long Island Rough Riders Soccer team. Additionally, he was an Assistant Team Physician for both the New York Saints Lacrosse team and the New York State Racing Association. While completing his fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Allen was Assistant Team Physician for the University of Pittsburgh and Assistant Company Physician for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

Dr. Allen is a graduate of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the New York Orthopedic Hospital-Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident. He is the author of over one hundred international and domestic peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and scientific presentations on shoulder, knee and elbow injuries. Dr. Allen has been recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly, one of NY’s Best Doctors by New York Magazine, and as a Super Doctor by the New York Times.

Dr. Allen graduated with a major in chemistry from Queens College.
