WHY I Support QC

Alice '68 and Russ '68 Artzt

When Alice Feldman and Russ Artzt met in mathematics class on the first day of their sophomore year, they never could have predicted that they would marry upon graduation. Today, mathematics still plays a vital role in their lives.

Russ serves as Vice Chairman of Computer Associates (CA), one of the world’s largest software companies, which he co-founded in 1976 with Queens College classmate Charles Wang ’67. With more than 30 years of IT industry experience as a technology leader, consultant, and executive, Russ is a recognized expert in software development and project management. He is also a member of the Queens College Foundation Board.

After teaching secondary school mathematics in the early part of her career, Alice went on to receive a PhD in mathematics education. Since 1983, she has been teaching Queens College courses that bridge mathematics and education. In addition, she is the co-founder and project director of TIME 2000 (Teaching Improvements Through Mathematics Education), an innovative four-year undergraduate mathematics teacher preparation program.

Alice is a recipient of the Queens College Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching; both Alice and Russ received the President’s Medal for service to the College and community in May 2008.

Why We Give

“I have a strong allegiance to Queens College,” says Russ, reflecting on his roots at QC. “Meeting Alice and my business partner there set the foundation for my business and personal life.” Both Alice and Russ deeply respect the hardworking nature of the students and recognize that a majority of them receive tuition assistance and still work to support themselves. Alice comments, “I walk on campus and I feel honored to work with these students. I am in awe of them.”  Russ adds, “Queens welcomes students of all cultures from countries all around the world. Most of the students are of humble roots, as Alice and I are. We can relate to them from our background.”  Alice agrees. “Queens is a place where you can fulfill your dreams no matter who you are and where you come from,” she concludes. “You feel part of the whole world.”

Alice and Russ believe so strongly in the mission of Queens College: We learn so that we may serve. “It is so in keeping with everything I do and my students are going to do – learn to give back,” Alice explains. “Help others. That’s what QC did for me. I’m trying to live that mission.”
